2019 Ford Ranger Preview

Overview

The Ford Ranger is back for 2019 after an eight-year hiatus. This mid-sized pickup stands out for its style and composition: unlike its bigger F-150 sibling, which has an aluminum body, the 2019 Ford Ranger has a body of steel. Its powerplant is a four-cylinder 2.3-liter turbo engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With these things going for it, the Ranger will give its competition - the Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma - a run for their money. It will also be built right in Michigan, and that alone will make many truck buyers happy.

Style & Safety

Ranger buyers will be able to choose two-wheel or four-wheel-drive, with three trims available: the XL, XLT, and Lariat. The available options groupings are highlighted by the FX4 Off-Road Package, which includes skid plates, all-terrain tires, a reinforced suspension, and more to bring new meaning to the slogan Built Ford Tough. There will also be Chrome and Sport appearance packages.

Active safety technology has come a long way since we last saw a brand-new Ford Ranger, and this generation is packed with those crash-avoiding features. A lane-keeping system, and pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise technologies are all available to greatly enhance the safety of everyone in and around this truck.

Performance & Technology

The Ford Ranger 2019 will feature a 2.3-liter EcoBoost (turbo) four-cylinder engine, connected to a 10-speed automatic transmission equipped with Start & Stop technology. Although the details aren't clear yet, Ford attests that this engine will perform like a V6, but with the efficiency of two fewer cylinders.

Rugged drivers need their technology as much as anyone else, and the new Ranger will deliver. It will come equipped with the FordPass Connect system, which includes its own Wi-Fi hotspot that works within a 50-foot range of the vehicle and can connect as many as ten devices. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone capability are standard, and a navigation system can be added.
